NEHA Region 4 VP
To keep you updated on the CFSP issue, the NEHA Board had more discussion about this
at our December meeting. It was obvious from the feedback at the Minnesota conference
in October that very few of you would want to have both the REHS/RS and any level of
CFSP. This, of course, creates a dilemma. If NEHA develops a two tiered system of food
safety credential, what will the market be?
And as the issue of food safety becomes more prominent in our country, due in great part
to the recent E. Coli outbreaks, how should food safety credentialing work? This will be of
primary importance to the committee charged with addressing the CFSP issues. The
committee will be looking at efforts by other groups that develop training programs for food
safety inspections. The CFSP debate is more than developing another exam with different
qualifications. Stay tuned for updates!
NEHA has responded strongly this past year to proposed legislation that would adversely
affect our profession. Letters of opposition were sent to many Representatives and
Senators regarding HR 4167 The National Uniformity for Food Act. NEHA’s legislative
awareness, coupled with rapid response and notification to its members, supports our
profession at the national level, similar to affiliate legislative committees who respond to
state legislature proposals.
Plans for the 2007 Region 4 Conference September 25-27 in LaCrosse are progressing
very well. Program Chair Lauri Clements is keeping the committee on task. Several
speakers have already been secured and there has been follow-up on the suggestions
and recommendations that many of you shared in the on-line survey this fall. We are still
very interested in case studies for presentation. If you are willing to present at the
conference, please contact a committee member (listed below) or email Lauri Clements
lclements@tremplocounty.com with information about your study.
Committee members include Lauri, Chuck Warzecha, Mary Myszka, Dave St. Jules, Denise
Jelle, Kirsten Gierhart, and Liz Evans from Wisconsin; Grant Larson, North Dakota; John
Weaver, outh Dakota; Brian Hanft and Ken Sharp, Iowa; Doug Clark, Nebraska; Petrona
Lee, Angie Wheeler, and Bette Packer, Minnesota.
My wishes to all for a prosperous New Year filled with professional challenges and
exciting results! Bette
